Writing a review of Joe Gallant’s magnum opus Avenue X is a daunting task. The film defies description. Described by those strange folks at Black Mirror productions as a “psyche-sexual porn mediation,” Ave X is the thinking man’s adult film. There was indeed a time when adult films didn’t just mean a skin flick. Adult films dealt with mature issues in a frank and often innovative way. Joe Gallant is brining that back with his science fiction fuckfest Ave X.
Set in the near future (a frightening close 2010), Ave X tells the tale of an oppressive corporate government that regulates everything, even sex. The government created porn is brutal and the participants are forced into Abu-Graib like conditions. There are rebels who defy the government and make their own porn. These rebels are unwittingly the recipients of telepathic messages from unseen aliens. Although the visions the rebels get are nightmarish, it seems that the aliens are against what the government is doing and that these messages are meant to help mankind. Got that so far?
As for the xxx in Ave X, well, you are in for quite a treat. There is nothing vanilla at all about the film. The first sex shown involves a woman hopping around like a bunny and nipping at her boyfriend’s gaping asshole. The rebels engage in threesomes, ass-to-mouth, and double penetration. One woman manages to squirt liquid pumped into her vagina for about 3 feet. The government creates heavy duty BDSM porn. The sex scenes are longer than usual in an adult movie. It can be quite exhausting to be honest.
For all its unique qualities, there are indeed some flaws in Ave X. The marathon sex in the film is draining both mentally and physically. It’s a film that both makes you want to masturbate and think about the deep issues that are dramatized. You cannot imagine how hard that is for most people. Those looking for a cheap thrill will get turned off by the long intellectual dialogues that occur throughout the film. Indie film fans used to Sundance may likewise be taken back by the extreme sex. At times the film is uneven and it is obvious that there was a struggle between the artistic vision of Joe Gallant and the monetary concerns of VCA.
Even if you view Ave X as a mess, it is an intriguing mess. You just cannot keep your eyes off it. The film is destined to be a cult favorite. Joe Gallant’s career is heading towards the true auteur status he has been wanting and although Ave X may not be his Citizen Kane, it does show that he is heading in the right direction. AvenueX
