Sometimes, apple martinis get a bad reputation. Some have stuck their noses in the air and mistakenly labeled the apple martini a “chick drink” or dismissed it altogether as not a “real” martini. After all, a traditional martini involves a couple ounces of gin and a little vermouth, and the apple martini doesn’t have either of those ingredients.
Those people don’t know what they’re missing.
The apple martini is a very versatile drink, perfect for both men and women, and great to have at a bar, at home, or out on a date. Apple martinis can be made to suit just about any palate or persuasion. The most important part is to not be afraid of experimenting, fiddling with the recipe until you have it just the way you want it.
Most people agree that an apple martini (or an appletini, as some call it) is usually an equal amount of vodka and apple-flavored schnapps or pucker shaken over ice and strained into a martini glass. That, however, is just the start.
Want to make the drink a little more masculine? Mix an ounce of vodka, an ounce of sour apple schnapps, and an ounce of fresh apple juice, shake it over ice, and enjoy. The drink tastes like autumn, like what the changing of the leaves might taste like if you could make it into a drink. If you’re feeling adventurous, add a little cinnamon, or maybe even give it a granny smith apple garnish.
Want to take the drink a little more upscale? Use an apple-flavored vodka and something like Graf’s Apfel Sauer. Suddenly the drink feels more upscale, even intellectual. If you want to impress your friends, serve it with a wedge of cheese for garnish.
Or, if you want the apple martini to taste just like it does at a bar, simply mix one part vodka and one part sour apple Pucker, shake over ice and strain as usual, and suddenly you have what would be a $10 drink in the privacy of your own home.
Apple martinis, when done the way you like it, can be a little taste of perfection. Dress it up, dress it down, take it out on the town, but most of all, experiment with it and make it your own.
