Softcore is an abandoned art form in the adult film industry. It’s wild offspring hardcore pornography has taken the spotlight and refuses to give it up. The reason softcore is not as heavily promoted as it use to be, is not because the public doesn’t demand it. Popular television shows like Showtime’s Red Shoe Diaries have proven that softcore can attract a sizable audience. The real reason is that quality softcore is extremely hard to make. Good softcore can often be intensely more arousing than hardcore. Bad softcore often comes off as pretentious and boring and leaves you unfulfilled. Unfortunately, despite some bright moments, Voyeur Vol. 1 “A little Kink” justs doesn’t have enough kink to satisfy.
Voyeur Vol. 1 “A little Kink” is little more than a collection of six vignettes dealing with certain sexual situations. In the “Seduction” a trusted male friend consoles a woman depressed about how her boyfriend is cheating on her. Of course, he decides his friend needs something more than just a shoulder to cry on and the two make love. Chloe shows off some good acting chops here. Another dramatic story called “Taboo: Tom, Paula, and Joannie” involves a man cheating on his wife with her sister.
The other stories are more light-hearted. In “Time Share,” a man and a woman fight over a really great beach house by declaring whom cums the first has to leave. “Neglected Wife” involves a couple too busy to fuck and “Legal Briefs” is about lawyers fantasizing about their clients. The latter has the best sex scenes in the DVD. The titles segment, “A Little Kink” is a rather lame story of a shy guy who records his roommate’s sister masturbating. When he confesses to his roommate, she gets turned on and plans to leave him a video of her and her sister doing things that are probably illegal in most states.
Director B.R. Lewis definitely has talent. The problem is that this DVD includes some of his gems alongside some of his duds. The best is “Legal Briefs” since it is more focused and the artistic touches are restrained. His use of filming through the crack of an open door and behind sheer curtains reinforces the voyeur aspect of the stories perfectly. His other artistic efforts however are less successful. In “A Little Kink,” “Seduction” and “Time Share,” Lewis plays around with time by cutting and pasting the action in a non-linear way. The effect is confusing and not at all enjoyable.
Softcore fans will want to skip Voyeur Vol. 1 “A little Kink” and wait for Showtime to finally release the Red Shoe Diaries in a box set. Unless volume 2 improves on the formula, Voyeur isn’t the series to watch.
