The first time I picked up the case for Voluptuous Life, I became very excited. I love thick, curvy women and this title seemed to be just my cup of tea (not to mention the main star, April Flores, is smoking hot). Everything about this title seemed to be an obvious nod to fans of bigger women, so naturally I could not wait to write this review. Unfortunately, Voluptuous Life is not your average porno. Actually, to some extent, it’s not a porno at all. Yes, there is plenty of nudity. Yes, there is a little bit of toy play. No, there is not a great deal of stroke material.
The concept behind Voluptuous Life is interesting but approached in the wrong manner. The film documents adult film star April Flores as she travels to various parts of the country (New York, Los Angeles, etc.) to do photo shoots. Along the way, quotes from April will appear on screen at various times with positive messages about beauty and self esteem. The idea is to show a beautiful, full-figured woman like April, traveling the country, having fun, and being totally confident with herself. Sounds like an after-school special for young people right? Voluptuous Life actually plays like a video version of a photo shoot. The majority of the time you watch April and the other models dress and prepare, then attend their photo shoots. Since they’re taking photos, there’s no real need for any actual sex or penetration. However, some light penetration is involved. Towards the end of the vid, there is a photo shoot at Silver Lake between April and a skinnier model. The girls take turns dildoing each other, with a nice focus April’s big ass. The following scene also includes dildos and a little bit of oral (both receiving) ending with a 69. Now I know that these final scenes sound hot, but you have to wait through the whole film to get there and even when you do make it the pay off is not enough to cover the cost of the trip.
I’m actually sorry to say that the photo gallery in the special features offers more than the actual film does. At least in the photos, the models are not obscured by the funky lighting designs. There is also a behind-the-scenes feature but it’s really just another example of April preparing for another photo shoot, as opposed to April speaking to the audience about being a voluptuous woman. Oh, and the entire film is driven by instrumental music (and the only scene that includes dialogue is a photo shoot with April and a drag queen).
Voluptuous Life is shot with an eye for art and beauty, but no sense of target audience. Is it a porno? Is it a documentary? Is it both? Yes, maybe, who knows? What I can say is that it was no where near what I had expected, and in this case, that actually turned out to be a not so good thing. VoluptuousLife
