The decade known as the 70s brought us a style of cinema that is often imitated but never equaled. You can copy the clothing and hairstyles, create a funky color scheme, and throw on a far-out soundtrack, but it just won’t be the same as the genuine article created during the times. Such is the case with the classic Through The Looking Glass, a skin flick which has all of the above and so much more. Though a lack of sexual encounters take away from the stroke factor of this film, it is impossible to not respect the style and value of the production as a whole.
Released in 1976, Through The Looking Glass is the story of a family who are going through some unusual times, at least wife Catherine Burgess is. Catherine is married to Douglas Wood-who gives a fabulous performance as the loving yet agitated husband-and they live in a mansion in the country side with their daughter Jennifer (Laura Nicholson). Catherine seems preoccupied with her thoughts, and through the entire film she never seems to have her mind totally there.
After a quick finger tease from Wood, Burgess feels upset and walks away to clear her head. She ends up in front of a mirror in the attic and starts to masturbate. While she pleasures herself, a demon hand slowly comes out of the mirror towards Catherine’s pussy. The demon fingers here leading to an internal (!) video shot of Catherine’s vagina. But wait, it gets better…After this encounter Catherine feels dirty (though she seemed to be hallucinating about the whole experience) a decides she must cleanse herself.
After a quick yet sloppy bj between the maid and groundskeeper, we find Catherine being drawn toward the mirror again. This time she steps through to meet with another beautiful woman who she fools around with for a few minutes. This leads to a complete Victorian trip-out orgy on the mansion grounds complete with lesbians, bj’s, and cum swapping.
Later, during a flashback, we see a younger Catherine being seduced by an older man. After the bj we see that the man is really a demon, and in a sense has always been in the house, following Catherine. The climax of the film has demon Gillis fulfilling his goal of bringing Catherine to a sexual hell filled with other demons. Catherine sees the mirror back home and must climb the firey dunes to escape the hell she is in. Does she make it? You’ll have to watch to find out.
Through The Looking Glass is the sexy supernatural shocker that gives the seventies a good name when it comes to adult films. The soundtrack is brilliantly composed by Academy Award Winner Arlon Ober and the cinematography is an exciting mix of old world vision and 1970s psychedelia. Through The Looking Glass is like an orgasm for your eyes. I highly recommend not partaking in intoxicating substances before viewing this film on the grounds that you might just freak yourself out.
