Throat almost became the porn film that wasn’t. When Vivid producer Stephen Hirsch got the rights to remake the seminal ’72 porno Deep Throat, everybody was enthusiastic about the new production – after all Hirsch had hit gold with remakes of Debbie Does Dallas and The Devil in Miss Jones.
But things went wrong when the rights-holders to Deep Throat saw the script for Hirsch’s project. Turning the upbeat, cheerful tale of a deep-throating diva into a dark and dastardly murder mystery apparently put them off the whole project. They pulled their involvement and Vivid was left with a remake of Deep Throat that they couldn’t market as such.
Well, the legal battle is still ongoing, but a timely title change has given us the opportunity to see the eagerly awaited movie. Deep Throat has become Throat: A Cautionary Tale.
In keeping with the ’72 original, the premise is the same. Sexy student Sasha Grey, filling the role once played by Linda Lovelace, is short on money and devoid of sexual excitement until she discovers that her clitoris is actually located in her throat (this might be more common than she realizes. Many men have problems locating the clitoris)!
Unleashing her orgasmic potential, Sasha’s deep-throat skills soon attract the attention of a wide variety of dodgy dealers—and result in her lying cold and dead on the autopsy table at the morgue.
Throat opens with LA cops Tom Byron and Penny Flame investigating her death—and tracing back her sordid story until they uncover the culprit. It’s basically a hardcore whodunit, with plenty of suspects who each exploited Sasha’s oral abilities for their own unseemly ends.
When Director Paul Thomas decided to helm the Throat project, he obviously saw the Deep Throat tie-in as paying off, which explains why Throat’s filmed with lavish production values and a stellar cast of porn’s hardest working wünderkinds.
It’s actually a good movie. Sasha Grey is excellent in the lead role (unsurprising, considering she recently crossed over into the mainstream with The Girlfriend Experience.) Likewise, the rest of the cast do an astonishingly convincing job; pulling off a crime drama that’s the equal of any ‘Direct to DVD’ that you’ll find in Blockbusters.
And there’s sex. Lots of sex. Sasha Grey’s deep-throating dexterity pays dividends as she’s forced to blow a legion of porn’s luckiest men. In once scene, in which her boyfriend essentially ‘pimps out’ her mouth to a lineup of his sleazy colleagues, Sasha sucks and swallows half a dozen cocks, one after the other. It’s astonishing stuff – some of the sexiest screen time I’ve seen (and that’s despite reviewing dozens of DVDs).
And it’s not just her oral abilities that get put to the test – Sasha also fucks Evan Stone in an incredibly intense anal scene. Meanwhile, Penny Flame puts her pussy to work in the scandalous subplot – which sees the hardworking cop tail off towards an alcohol addiction which ultimately ends in tragedy.
All in all, Throat comes together like the perfect porn film. It’s slick, well scripted, packed with porn and just as tightly edited as any mainstream movie. It’s the release of the year and a ‘must-own’ for any self-respecting aficionado of adult entertainment.
