The title of The Perfect Secretary invokes images of the similarly named 1992 BDSM film, Secretary. The actors even admit they watched the non-porn title for inspiration during the behind-the-scenes featurette. However, though far more sexually explicit than Secretary, consummate bondage, domination and humiliation fans will prefer Hollywood’s take on disobedient office workers.
The Perfect Secretary starts out promisingly enough. Haley Paige’s character is talking on her cell phone in her car, complaining to her friend that she was caught masturbating seven times at work, and has been sent for reconditioning at the “Penumbra Corporation.” She can’t even stop herself from masturbating right there in the car.
When she arrives at the Penumbra office, she is asked by the male executive that greets her to sign a contract, submitting to behavior modification therapy of different types. As he explains the nature of Penumbra, Sir Nik, the BDSM consultant on the film, rolls in another secretary inside a glass case, who proceeds to offer the male executive his coffee.
After this point, the film starts to reveal its cracks. Firstly, the film isn’t really consistent. After Paige’s character finishes signing the contract, she asks that her hands be tied so that she can no longer masturbate. The sign on the entrance even lists “no masturbation” as one of its iron-clad rules.
However, her request for her hands to be tied isn’t immediately fulfilled, and even when she is physically restrained later in the film, it’s not in a way that keeps her from autoerotic pleasure. In fact, at points in the film where she observes other secretaries being dominated and having sex, she masturbates freely with no reprimand from the dominant executives.
Another annoyance is that none of the submissive subjects seem to take their domination seriously. They follow the executives’ orders, but most seem to just be going through the motions, and don’t really exude a submissive vibe. In some scenes, it seems as if the theme of domination takes a backseat to directionless group sex.
Also, the male executives don’t really discipline the women under them, and far more common than bondage and spanking is simple sex as discipline. If the film was in the true spirit of BDSM, sex would be withheld more often as punishment, rather than given out freely. How is dispensing constant pleasure discipline?
The final scene has great potential, when Paige stumbles upon a room of tied up and sexually starved secretaries, who scream out for simple human touch, and beg Paige to let them masturbate or even to just touch them. However, instead of exploring that slowly, Paige just unties her fellow submissives, and the head male executive comes in and joins them in more group sex.
The production value of the film really isn’t that hot, either. The different Penumbra rooms are well-designed and give a deliciously dark and surreal vibe, but these settings aren’t really used to their potential.
Sound quality is poor at times, and often one can’t tell what the actors are saying. In addition, there are continuity problems. In one scene, a dominant inspects a submissive’s typed document, hands it back to her, and then hands the same page to her a second time in the next shot. (Not to mention that one of Penumbra’s listed rules is “no word processing,” which it seems is mostly what the trainees do at Penumbra, besides sexually pleasing the dominant executives.)
Also, in one scene where Paige’s character decides to have sex with a cactus, rather than a real penis, she squats in front of the cactus, but never actually makes physical contact with it.
To be fair, The Perfect Secretary isn’t totally dismal. Carmen Luvana receives top billing as Penumbra’s “perfect secretary,” even though Paige plays the principal role, and with good reason. This film contains Luvana’s first ever anal scene, and in addition to being stunningly beautiful, she plays her role well, giving alluring looks and calling out in Spanish at just the right moments.
In conclusion, The Perfect Secretary is a film with a lot of potential that doesn’t really deliver. Vanilla fans will enjoy this title more than true BDSM fans will. ThePerfectSecretary
