How big of an adult movie fan do you have to be to be entertained by the 2 disc set of the legendary AVN Awards? The answer is in the opening ten minutes, as the porn stars shuffle in and mix it up with legendary director, Chi Chi LaRue, (who would replace Joan and Melissa Rivers at the Oscars in a perfect world,) as she interviews the various adult movie stars before the ceremonies begin. I was instantly glued to the television, and amused and delighted, by the candor and light-hearted banter that was exchanged.

If you watch the occasional adult movie and know who Jenna Jameson or Seymore Butts or Ron Jeremy is, then you have enough adult knowledge to enjoy the AVN awards. However, if you are visiting www.sexherald.com and reading adult movie reviews, then you are probably a pretty big adult movie fan and want to know what's in it for the adult movie fan. This review is for both types of people, but maybe more for the latter because being a fan of adult films will give you insight into this event that a casual viewer might not have.

Many adult movie fans have dreamed of attending the AVN Awards because of the wild stories and plentiful sightings of their favorite adult stars and starlets. Those of us who have made our careers in the video industry or in video stores have often dreamed of making the unholy trip to Sin City and attending the AVN Awards in hopes of returning to our friends and family with unforgettable stories of decadence and debauchery. Owning this DVD will be the closest many of us will ever get to attending this awesome and absurd celebration of adult movies, and, I say it is a DVD well worth owning.

Hosted by Jenna Jameson, (Jenna fans will not want to miss this,) and comedian and “Tough Crowd” regular, Jim Norton, the 2004 AVN Awards have their hits and misses, (like any awards show,) but what sets them apart is the lack of false pretense and posturing. The nominated and award winning talent take the proceedings with a genuine mix of gratitude and self-mocking. Yes, these people are being honored for their work in the adult entertainment industry and no, they don’t take it too seriously, but it is obvious that they enjoy what they do and the company of their peers in the industry. It is also my humble opinion that they deserve this awards show because what they do is both work and art, and we fans appreciate it!

I found this 2 disc DVD set to be insightful and thoroughly enjoyable on many levels. It is very professionally put together and packaged and justifies the label of “collector’s edition.” The Academy Awards could never release a full version of their awards show because it is usually so painfully dull, but the AVN Awards not only allows the viewers to experience a more candid side of their favorite performer, but it shows them incredibly hot scenes from the movies that they might have missed! The adult industry owes AVN a great deal for this awards show because it highlights some great looking movies we might have missed and will definitely be adding to our collections!

The in-between “behind the scenes” clips with porn starts giving sex tips are sometimes amusing but a little silly, and we don’t really need a musical performance from the Tubes or Lil` Jon & the Ying Yang Twins, (but the wild onstage antics of the beautiful women don’t hurt).

The bottom line here is that this isn’t a typical adult movie purchase, though it does have its fair share of clips of the best sex scenes of the last year. It is a very entertaining and interesting look at the biggest adult awards ceremony and well worth watching and owning. Fans who want to see a more personal side of their favorite stars and who enjoy a more “behind the scenes” aspect of the adult industry will really find this DVD set a rewarding purchase. For those who don’t care much about the talent behind the adult entertainment industry will still be treated to some great sex segments and a ton of bonus features that make this DVD worth re-watching.
