I’ve always been told that I have an old soul. My response is usually a nod and smile, because I have no clue what that means. I don’t think I dress like I’m stuck in the 70s. I do have a fondness for 80s music, but that’s just because I’m a child of the 80s. I don’t feel that I’m very retro at all. Although I am somewhat of a history buff, maybe that’s why classic porn seems to peak my interest. Kieth Webster’s Roommates is touted as a classic from 1980 starring Kip Noll, Lee Marlin and Kourey Mitchell.

Yes it’s a porn only starring three men, nowadays that’s the minimum amount of guys in one scene. I will be honest I did experience some culture shock while watching Roommates. Gay culture is profoundly different now than it was in 1980. When I first watched this porn I couldn’t believe this was what turned gay men on in the early 80s, but with time this film has actually grown on me.

The only sex scene is where Kip Noll and Lee Marlin show how close a roommate can actually become. Kip Noll is the star of the film. He gets top billing, more screen time and the screenplay actually seems to be written around him. His cast mate Lee Marlin is more to my liking. Noll is a blonde with a very youthful appearance who looks like he spends his days on a Californian beach. Marlin for the most part can be described as the same, except he’s a brunette and has a more mature appearance. The sex between these two young men is playful, but also surprisingly nasty. The amount of spit they use to jerk one another off could fill a one-quart pitcher. The best word to describe the sex between them is real. When I watched this film it never occurred to me that these two men were acting. Unlike today, these stars aren’t trying to be sexy or provocative for the camera they were having sex and fun that is being filmed. This has to be the best porn scene I’ve seen so far from an 80s movie.

The other two scenes are jerk-off scenes. The first staring Noll and the other is Kourey Mitchell, whose character is reminiscing about Noll who was his high school classmate. These scenes are straight up jerk off scenes with no thrills or frills added.

There are many elements that give this film character; some good and some not so good. The voiceovers in this movie are hilarious. There is not even an attempt to match the words with the movements of the actor’s mouth. I feel that sex and laughter go hand in hand, this film definitely allows for this. What I didn’t find so funny was the lines the narrator was given to read. They were nothing but a distraction. It’s nearly impossible to be poetic and explicit at the same time. I thought that the lines were beyond corny and that they bordered on horrendous.

Here’s the bottom line. If you are a classic porn fan you will like this film and should purchase it, but if you’re not your collection won’t look any less impressive by not getting this film.
