In Red Dragon, Stephanie Swift revisits a fictional past life as a
high-end call girl with the intention of paying her respects to Yoshi,
the recently deceased proprietor of the Asian-flavored business. After
some prodding from former colleague Asia Carrera, Swift ends up back
for more than mourning in this tastefully stylized amalgam of Eastern
tradition and modern Western hedonism.
In the first sex scene, Yoshi (played by Joel Lawrence), is alive
and well as he takes on kimono-clad Carrera in a poolside fuck fest.
What better way to kick off an Eastern-flavored feature than Carrera?
After all these years, she oozes vitality and still fucks with a
delighted look in her eyes. By the next scene, it is clear that
Yoshi has kicked the bucket, but the viewer is left to speculate
whether his romp with Carrera was his last blast. If it was, I can’t
think of a better way to go out.
Swift appears in some transitional plot-setting scenes before making
her sexual debut with Mark Davis on a motorcycle. The scene has
the feel of an X-rated techno video -- a weird one at that. The
windblown, red-vinyl clad Swift fakes riding the cycle for a few
bizarre moments before she is joined by Davis, who looks like a
future shock Bruce Willis with his shaved head and leather pants.
With the bike as ballast, Davis and Swift savage each other orally
and vaginally before Davis delivers an ample white load in Swift’s
pert mouth. Director Brad Armstrong’s artistic sensibility
is front and center with the red motorcycle and curved red I-beam
type structure contrast against a white backdrop; it is just one
of many scenes in the film where the rich colors are as enthralling
as the sex on the screen.
By the second to last scene, Swift still has some misgivings about
returning to the profession. “It was like they’d sit
around making up weird shit for us to do,” Swift deadpans
in narration. Here the weird shit involves two suits dining on sushi
and sake laid out on a bed of open-kimono Swift. After the boys
are done feasting, Swift tops the wasabi burn with a hot desert
of double fellatio. Like any good sushi meal, the gratification
is quick and intense.
The film culminates in a gleeful pop-video-slash-four-way romp
involving Swift, Carrera and Kianna (a blonde, full-breasted Asian
who also serves vet Jonathan Morgan some hot full-release back work
in a prior scene). Here, the Asian theme is all but abandoned aside
from the Asian neon sign on the wall and the sake on the client’s
table. The three girls enter in full dirty schoolgirl getups –
plaid skirts, tight white shirts, and loosely-tied pigtails –
lip-synching to dizzy techno-throb into those wireless headsets
that are common gear for the Britneys and Christinas of superstardom,
as director Armstrong flicks a stack of $20s at the girls. Armstrong
apparently had to stand in for the no-show actor he had hired, but
after getting his way with these three naughty hotties, it is quite
clear he should have no regrets.
If I had to come up with a phrase to describe this sub-genre of
porn, I would call it cross-cultural retro futurism. With a decent
plot, artful décor, and just the right balance of sex and
stylization, Red Dragon delivers the scorching goods. Visually,
it’s a feast, and the sex is quite compelling. This film is
highly recommended for those readers who like to enhance the porno
proceedings with a tasty joint. Red Dragon is a fine testament to
Armstrong’s creativity, originality, and craftwork. RedDragon
