While Buttman wrote the book on gonzo, Mike John is defining the new chapters of the next level of gonzo – POV – with the first installment of his POV Pervert series. For the uninitiated, POV is gonzo by definition, except the cameraman is the sole stunt dick involved in the affair. It is probably the closest thing to truly interactive porn (at least for male viewers, in the case of this series) without the involvement of sex simulation technology (i.e. linked-up robotic devices, etc.). POV is a formula with the potential to take the viewer’s fantasy one step closer to the action, and John – with no small help from a scorching cast of Red Light females – proves that he knows what it takes to do POV right.

As I mention above, the female talent – all beautiful pro-ams in their late teens and early 20s – drives the well-shot one-on-ones into the red. Frankly, I can’t figure out which babe to mention first. There’s the slender Asian/featured cover starlet Katsumi; the voluptuous cherub Brianna Blaze; the full-lipped, too-happy-to-be-literally-pouty, dirty blonde Haley…suffice to say, all seven of them (including ace bonus hottie Demi Marx; more on her later) comprise sugar-shock-level eye candy and deliver scorching fuck-and-suck action that manages to drive the cameraman (and this viewer, at least) to the uncontrollable edge.

But it’s not just the women that make this film such a viable production. John is an affable, funny guy in his late 30s who is self-deprecating and unafraid to admit to pre-action nerves of his own. He makes these women laugh and feel comfortable during each intro, an approach that makes this film a real pleasure to watch. Make no mistake: this is hardcore fuckin’ porno. But the kindness and respect in the scenes score big points in my book because it makes it all the more realistic in terms of the sex I have experienced. John shows that aggressive sex can be attained on film without being an asshole about it.

John doesn’t hog the camera for the entire production. In one scene, Erik Everhard mans the lens and is treated to the curvaceous Ariana Jolee, easily one of my favorite current, young starlets. The sex is slow and deliberate, which turns out to be an unusually effective dynamic for these two notoriously furious actors. Instead of going at it like wild animals, they savor each lick and stroke and feed off each other’s reactions. Jolee clearly delights in having Everhard’s fat cock in her ass, and her delicate approach in this scene made me realize she’s one versatile screen queen.

With POV Pervert, the viewer never gets the sense that Everhard or John are going through the motions. The scenes are truly sustained romps; no obvious cuts occur once the sex ensues. There are some zoom-ins that the human eye (at least mine) would not be able to do, but the viewer mainly captures the action from the guy’s point of view, which is the whole point, right? There is no distracting soundtrack music, just the sounds of a guy and a girl going at it and getting off. The tension that builds never seems like it’s forced.

While John turns in compelling scenes with all the starlets, it is the bonus romp with the toothy, nubile, 19-year-old brunette Demi Marx that sizzles above all the scenes. John is clearly at the mercy of this hottie – all breathy coos and pleasured sneers -- and it doesn’t take long before he’s yelling, “God dammit, it’s killing me!” The man is not lying; he spurts twice during this scene.

Viewers looking for the next level of gonzo should start with POV Pervert. With a hot cast of female talent and compelling, realistic, no-bullshit sex, John has set a high standard for any directors who hope to follow in his footsteps.
