Obsessions reminded this writer of a Mad TV skit, or perhaps an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Its cheesy dialogue, poor excuse for a plot and stark lack of enthusiasm from the male lead made it seem more and more like some sort of lampoon, as the film progressed. However, the gorgeous actresses and the skillful sexual congress allowed this film to make it into the “so-bad-it’s-good” category.
Firstly, when you put this film in, make sure you go into the audio options before you hit “play.” Despite the fact that Wicked Pictures, the American distributor of Obsessions, made sure to change the packaging and menus to English, the DVD is still defaulted to the original French. If you get turned on by hearing French spoken, though, leave it be. Actually, even if you listen to it in French, you’ll know the basics of what’s going on, provided you read on.
The movie begins with a beautiful blonde actress sitting on her sofa, talking into a friend, Sophie’s, answering machine. She’s explaining how, ever since her husband brought back an African idol from vacation, they’ve been hearing inexplicable drumbeats and feeling overwhelmed with lust. The only time you really see the narrator speak after this point is off-screen, as the director must have anticipated the international distribution of this piece, and didn’t want it to look like a bad dub job, a la the old Japanese monster flicks. None of the other characters ever speak audibly, on-screen or off, save for moans and screams of passion.
Obsessions goes on with several-minute flashbacks to what the woman only can conclude must be the idol’s supernatural effects, first showing us a passionate time in bed between the woman and her husband, as she wakes him up, stricken with passion. The actresses are gorgeous, living up to the “10-top models” promise printed right on top of the DVD case.
As for performance, creative locales, such as the hood of a sports car, a party bathroom, an antique sofa and a kitchen add spice to the film, and actually look authentic and not cheap, tawdry or temporary, including the interior shots of the husband and wife’s luxurious mansion. Costumes were of equal quality and salaciousness, with the women wearing fancy lingerie that didn’t look like it came from a novelty shop. (If garters get you off, you must purchase this film.)
The only inconsistency with the sexual performance was the women looking suggestively into the camera, as they gave blowjobs. This tended to break the mood, as this is supposed to be a re-enactment of scenes that occurred earlier and not reality. In conclusion, this is a decent film for the money, and certainly superior to the ocean of cheap, hastily thrown together crap that plagues the industry. If you can’t stand corny dialogue, hit “mute” or watch it in the original French (or one of the other foreign languages available). If the corny dialogue doesn’t bother you, or you like a little unintentional comedy with your sexual material, watch it in English. Either way, you’re in for a good time.
