The most prevalent sexual fantasy is what the French so elegantly call the menage a trois and what we Americans plainly refer to as the threesome. When most people hear the word “threesome,” they usually think of a guy having sex with two girls at one time. That isn’t the only kind of threesome there is. A popular fantasy among women as well as many men is to have two men pleasure a woman. To a growing number of people, this isn’t just a fantasy.
Threesomes can be complicated things to plan and take part in, so it's best people do a little research before jumping in. It would seem that the best expert to ask advice on threesomes would be an established porn star. Nina Hartley is a veteran in the business and her Nina Hartley’s Guide To series of instructional DVDs covers many different sexual practices. Her Threesomes: Two Guys and a Girl DVD attempts to instruct viewers into the joys of three-way sex. While it succeeds in showing how fun threesomes are, it ultimately fails as an educational aid.
The major problem with Nina Hartley’s Guide to Threesomes: Two Guys and a Girl, it plays more like a regular gonzo porno than an instructional sex DVD. Major porn players like Chris Cannon and Randy Spears make appearances in the DVD along with other adult film performers and engage in threesomes. These segments are meant to be visual aids. All the actors are more than familiar with threesomes and therefore do it very well. Hartley does admit that the viewers will not have their first threesomes go as well as those that appear in the DVD.
Rather than appear in realistic settings, we get such scenes as a waitress at a pool hall serving drinks while wearing lingerie. Such lack of realism doesn’t quite convey the point of Nina Hartley’s DVD that anyone can have a threesome. Everyone in the DVD is a professional. Rather than focus on adult performers, Hartley might have introduced real people who engage in threesomes as a way of life, not a living.
The segments are preceded and followed by some tips from Nina Hartley. To underscore her status as an expert, Hartley wears eyeglasses for a more sophisticated and intelligent look. Joining Hartley is the gorgeous Nicole Sheridan whose sole job in the DVD is to look hot. Hartley’s tips are, for the most part, pretty good, however they are short and not very detailed. She seems to gloss over many big issues. For instance, she stresses that people should be open about their sexual fantasies, but doesn’t suggest how to bring up the idea of a threesome to your partner in a delicate way. Nor does she discuss the possible problems threesomes may cause and how to handle them.
Rather than explain the positions that can be done in threesomes, the DVD just shows them performed by professionals. The sex segments would have been more effective if Hartley had done narration over them in order to best explain how do such positions. Narration wouldn’t have anyplace in a regular porno film, but then, this was supposed to be an instructional DVD. A major inconsistency in the DVD is that Hartley promotes safe sex at all times with the viewer; however, the male performers in the sex scenes do not wear condoms.
While Nina Hartley is a sex expert due to her career in the industry, she is not a certified sexologist. Her husband and director have made a living directing adult films for pleasure. Judging by Nina Hartley’s Guide to Threesomes: Two Guys and a Girl, those two would be better sticking to adult entertainment rather than adult education.
