Very entertaining!
We’ve got an enjoyable storyline, some good comedy, and as expected, quality performers. Julia Ann leads as a graphic designer caught amidst all sorts of relationship dramas. Most of these involve men taking their women for granted – it was a good while after watching the movie before I realized that the girls don’t actually get revenge; such was the quality of distraction.
It is a wholesome story nonetheless, centered around Julia’s relationship with a media executive played by Randy Spears. The love and war in question involves the continuing battle of the sexes, with all the players jockeying to command the heights of relationship intrigue. Longtime porn star Julia presents herself as a true veteran of these battles, replete with successful, five-step strategies and light years ahead of her younger peers, who all seem unable to “keep” their men.
After a generally uninspiring opening scene between Randy and Julia, we cut to one such peer – played by Felix Vicious, who has a punk persona mildly befitting her name. It’s a flashback to the first hook-up of her and boyfriend Steve Hatcher, who has since dumped her. It’s my first time watching either of these guys, and I was impressed. The scene itself was urgent, hungry, and impassioned in that rough, young punk love kind of way. Good stuff.
A dramatic change of mood as Randy’s employee Aurora Snow turns up in a fantasy sequence dreamed up by Eric Masterson. Eric proves quite deserving of note in this movie for some funny acting as Randy’s metrosexual sidekick. The interaction and arguments between the two are an amusing pleasure to watch.
Aurora provides an entirely different type of viewing pleasure. She’s described at least twice by director Toni English as an incredibly sweet girl – visually and personally – with an unbelievably nasty side. The fantasy scene is exactly what Eric’s character would dream up – fancy French soundtrack, artsy lighting, and so on; and the sex is pretty much exactly what I would dream up – tender but insistent, and at once smooth and excited.
Nicole Sheridan, Joelean, and Voodoo take us on a slight deviation from the Wicked norm – a threesome complete with strap-on and anal, mmhmm! The girls fight over our man Voodoo, which is always a treat for the guys, but the real intensity comes a little later. A complete novelty, there’s a part where Nicole is doing doggie-anal with a strap on tied to her back (think a shark’s fin or camel hump), which of course is where Joelean comes in, riding that strap on while face-to-face with Voodoo. This one’s definitely a keeper y’all.
In the continuing love tussles, and amusing backfires, Julia goes from being in control of the game to bumping into what appear to be irreconcilable differences with Randy, on account of some slander by Aurora. There’s a funny sequence of disaster dates as she tries to recover, but ends up in a little bi-curious experiment with onscreen buddy Lezley Zen. The lead-up is also pretty well acted, as Julia gets all puppy-like trying to persuade Lezley to allow her to take things across the friends-lovers line just this once.
Of course, with a little more comedy, things are brought to their happy end. Julia leaves us with “Make love not war…or do both, and get married.” Haha.
Watch out for fun special features: Julia and Toni English doing a commentary (some interesting sex-positive feminist viewpoints here), good Behind the Scenes, interviews, and the occasional angle-changing feature. LoveandWar
