What we have here is a porno with some NYPD Blue or Law & Order:
Special Victims Unit mixed in with a touch from the world of erotic
photo modeling for spice.
The detective/cop spin is pulled off surprisingly well; most fuckflicks
that try to incorporate anything vaguely serious often falls completely
flat, but Devinn Lane’s award winning acting (AVN 2003 –
Best Actress) and a decent script (the screenwriting debut of porn
star Stormy) save Kink from a similar fate. The plot even had me
guessing until the end – not something you hear often in porn
reviews.
Kink gets top scores for how the plot and the sex work together
– look no further for that elusive piece of smut that actually
puts a little effort into building up a character/situation dynamic
which works its way up and in to the sex.
You might be disappointed by the actual kink factor of the movie
though. We have some latex, a chain and some spiked collars, but
that’s mostly it; the rest of the sex is straight up. But,
Lord have mercy, it’s across the board hot hot HOT straight
up.
Plot summary: Devinn and Steven St. Croix play detective partners
investigating the successive murders of a number of models. Their
main lead is an erotic photographer played by Barrett Blade, who
has photographed each and every one of the victims. The movie follows
their hits and misses, and the copious sex each involves.
In Devinn’s brilliant portrayal of her character, what comes
across is a tense, experience-hardened and somewhat jaded cop who
does her job well but has known for too long that that’s not
enough to fill her life. Pretty deep (very deep, by porn standards),
and straight out of those cop dramas. Devinn herself has an interesting
look about her; she could certainly pass as the sweet, girl-next-door
type (a role she says she gets cast a lot in), but there are also
things about her that match her character’s harangued persona
perfectly.
It gets better too: her character and Steve’s are exes. The
dynamic between the two, with all its tension – sexual and
otherwise – comes off impressively well, justifying her Best
Actress award. The movie itself falls short for not actually making
this past relationship clear. I know it only from the optional voiceover
(a nice audio option where you can hear Devinn, director Brad Armstrong
and others make comments throughout the movie), and you are lucky
enough to know it because hey – that’s what we’re
here for.
The scene is beautiful enough as is, but knowing that this is a
flashback that Devinn’s tough, lonely character is having
from the better days of the relationship adds a precious –
and extremely effective – touch of poignancy; it might be
the thing to watch if you’re feeling (a good kind of) wistful
for an old lover. This effect is doubled by some really nice lighting,
adding a soft, early morning feel to what is already a very tender
scene. And the first few seconds of that blowjob were shot so beautifully.
After the flashback, we follow the duo on their first lead from
the investigation. Barrett is interrupted during his shoot and he
reacts angrily and defensively. After the interrogation, what better
way to relieve the stress by dicking his beautiful model –
played by the gorgeous Kaylani Lei, adding a little Asian touch
to the movie. She’s decked out in a latex, light blue kimono,
wields a samurai sword, and has this matching spiked collar; thus
the kink begins. It’s a hot scene too, with the hungry, voracious
energy perfectly matching what you might expect from a guy blowing
off steam.
Devinn decides to pose for Barrett to try and bait him, giving
us a little police fetish photo shoot. Barrett hits on Devinn after
the shoot, but she is a bundle of nerves and storms off, refusing
to take a ride back with Steve. She ends up at a bar, where a mysterious
Sydnee Steele has followed her to.
“Vodka orange juice. And it looks like the lady at the end
could use another one.” Thus begins a drunken seduction that
ends with Sydnee cornering Devinn in the ladies room. We’ve
got Devinn pressed against the bathroom window, Sydnee on the sink,
a dildo-like toy, and stocking-ripping, all in one scene. The toy
inspired Devinn to make a comment in the voiceover about the availability
of porn star action figures. Who knew?
Soon after, Devinn turns up a new lead: a rich guy type (Randy
Spears) who patronizes Barrett’s work extensively. We cut
to a scene where he’s being dominated, the only scene in the
movie remotely close to your standard S&M, and a pretty lightcore
one at that. It’s still good though, and starts with the mistress
(the beautiful blonde Bridgette Kerkove) whipping a doggy-positioned
Randy. This eventually progress to a blow job which involves latex
gloves all over his body and wrapping a chain three rounds around
the dick (three! and there was still space for many more; some dick),
and swaying it around during the facefuck. This remote-controlled-joystick
look was beautiful to behold, as was the reverse cowgirl that followed.
A lot of teasing, S&M talk, and some kick-ass boots.
Right after shooting his load, Randy is picked up by our cops in
a somewhat ridiculous scene involving sirens and police looking
a little silly encamped around a closed mansion door – we
can’t expect things to stray too far from standard porno quality.
Much less ridiculous is how Devinn chooses to celebrate after the
arrest. Declining Steve’s offer to “join the boys for
a beer,” Devinn heads straight for Barrett’s photo studio.
Now, there’s at least a quarter of the film to go, so no
idiot is going to believe that Randy was the killer. What this does
for us is create the sexciting possibility that Devinn is making
a booty call to a serial killer.
It’s an incredibly hot scene – I’m going to say
it’s my favorite of the movie. The emotional climax is one
of a hard-ass, but beautiful, cop finally letting herself go and
giving in to full frontal carnality. Mmmm… The two performers
have good chemistry, and that sense that this is the release of
pent-up tension and passion of the bodice-ripping variety really
comes across. There are about three positions, and in every one
of them Devinn hits the nail on the head portraying a girl who is
at long last getting and giving a good hard fucking, and loving
every minute of it. Also, it’s not often that stripping involves
a bulletproof vest, but there’s another added bonus for you.
Another reminder that the movie isn’t perfect. I’m
starting to notice that more than a couple of these Wicked girls
are leaning towards the rounded (no naming names, but Phantom Love
has similar performers). I’m all about a healthy body image
and I’ll be the first to say they’re still hot as hell,
but given the nature of the work, I’m almost imagining that
part of the sales pitch is not to make regular women feel too fat.
For the most part though, the movie hits all the bases. The angles,
position variety and timing are all good (though I’m going
to say still a little too many close-ups); little things like the
lighting is also better than most pornos, making this one of the
few movies where you find screen quality that comes close to matching
box cover artistic standards. The special features are also pretty
good, providing the standard behind the scenes, bloopers, interviews,
and so on. Most importantly, the performers shine – that extra
bit of passion is the difference between good porn and boring smut,
and again this is better plot-sex interrelatedness than I’ve
seen in a long time. Kink
