The Hustler brand has always been a big name in the adult film industry. Larry Flynt’s empire has given us many quality products over the years. One of the latest is a Hustler Confidential box set of Frank Thring’s Riviera Heat films. The idea of a Hustler double feature sure does promise a lot, but the question remains whether it lives up to its potential.
For the most part, the box set is great. Labeled on the box as a “sex thriller," Riviera Heat involves the sleazy and cutthroat business of, get this: the porn industry! Not many adult films would portray their own business in less than flattering ways so Frank Thring should get some props for tackling this subject.
In part 1, Dick is from Prague and on vacation in the Riviera. During a sexual escapade on the beach, a blonde spies on them and gets turned on. Later in town, the blonde approaches Dick and introduces herself as Tanya, an actress. She tells him that he would be perfect for a part in her next movie being filmed on the island. Dick is excited about the offer and shows up to the set only to be shocked to find that the film being shot is a porno. Of course, he gets over his shock and agrees to do the shoot prompting his girlfriend to leave him.
During all this, the two filmmakers, Marco (Claudio Meloni) and Jimmy (Steve Hooper) argue whether the new guy is worth keeping. Part 2, Dick becomes further involved in Tanya’s world. They arrive at the chateau of a duke who is not only a great fan of their work, but an aspiring performer as well. The gray haired aristocrat has a penchant for eating pussy and S/M. As the sex gets less vanilla, Dick questions whether he made the right choice.
For a “sex thriller,” Riviera Heat doesn’t live up to its promise. Tanya doesn’t become the evil temptress we expected at the beginning. Marco and Jimmy are not real villains. The girls bound and gagged at the chateau do so willingly. Dick’s second thoughts about the porn business are the result of his own inner conflicts and not because he witnesses any wrongdoing. So Frank Thring’s “sex thriller” had no thrills, but it sure did have sex. There’s a little bit of everything for everyone in these two discs.
There is S/M, voyeurism, sodomy, orgies, and shoe fetishism. Of note is the cum scene in which five girls’ faces get cum on in sequence. George Uhl has a hell of a good time filming these scenes, he gives a top-notch performance, and the beautiful Jessica Fiorentino is a delight to watch. Unfortunately, she is the good girl so we don’t get to watch her do anything too outrageous. For that we have Dora Venter who, in addition to being a willing and able performer can also act pretty well.
You better like accents because there are a lot of them in these films. In addition to the Czech accents that Uhl and Fiorentino speak with, you have British (Hooper) and Italian (nearly everyone else in the film). Besides sex, Riviera Heat offers some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever scene in an adult film. The duke’s chateau is a real chateau, not the inside of hotel room. There is a load of special features including director’s profile, Internet links, and private “Sex Talk” with one of the stars. A unique feature is a Cast List which details which performers are in each sex scene which is a valuable resource if you’re a porn reviewer like me.
