Art house porn? Could there be such a thing? Not quite yet, maybe, but the Adam & Eve production Hello Nurse certainly has moments of potential conversation fodder for the latte-sipping crowd: metaphor, philosophical subtext, jizz at odd angles… You might even call it a cum-dripping glance into the porn of the future; a porn beyond sucking and fucking.

Exaggeration? Perhaps. There is quite a bit of sucking and fucking. But then again, there are also instants of creative subtlety that make you wonder if director James Avalon isn’t onto something more. The scenes in Hello Nurse are prominently titled, introduced like short narratives ripped straight from a 1940s pulp magazine. There’s even a grit and grain to the film that parallels that of the demented world of the old pulps: one where nurses fuck their male patients in the ass with a strap-on, collect semen samples, and fuck the homeless. It’s a perverse retro lens we get to look through, a peephole peek into a place where nurses still don an all-white uniform.

What better person then than Ava Rose (a brunette who exudes classic pin-up girl looks—think Dita Von-Teese) to put on the white cap and stockings and star in a movie that pays tribute to this oft-forgotten fetish of yesteryear. Her opening scene is elegantly arranged: A patient moans at a hospital bedside, Ava decides swiftly to resolve the issue into her mouth.

The set-ups move quickly in Hello Nurse, immersing the viewer without making him or her impatient. Here, in Ava’s first scene, we get to appreciate her outfit up to a pleasurable tease, taking in her curvy body under a tight nurse’s coat that’s hiked thigh high. Even as she gets pounded over the hospital bed, her nurse’s cap stays pinned on, and a stethoscope remains dangling around her neck. This is a much-appreciated consideration, with so many other pornos abandoning their fetish theme mid-scene, in favor of boring nakedness.

Consistently artful camera work is in part what helps Hello Nurse stand out. From a brilliant doggy-style shot in front of a mirror to clever beneath-the-leg angles, it’s obvious that care was put into the cinematography, with an intent to fit all points of interest on screen gracefully. Better still, though, are outlandish scenarios in scenes like “Angel of Mercy” featuring petite blonde Annette Schwarz as the figment of a homeless man’s imagination.

“It’s your fantasy, you can do whatever you want,” Ms. Schwarz beckons wearing angel wings and a nurse’s cap. The dream sequence proceeds in heavy saturated white, with the eerie sounds of sex at the gates of heaven. In the middle of the full array of positions that put those angel wings to use, there are moments of sublime silence, a zoom into Ms. Schwarz’s pearl necklace. Then, as the scene closes, we understand their meaning: They were a foreshadow of the cumshot to come.
