Hard Up, Jim Steel’s latest film from HIS Video, is middle-of-the-road porn, but in the best sense of the term. It’s the video equivalent of paging through well-shot photo spreads in a stroke mag. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, especially if you’re horny and in a hurry. But unless a certain performer or dick catches your eye, you might not remember many details about it in a month’s time.
The movie begins with Jason Crew and Mark Hansford on a red couch. Crew has a great face and a terrific, long, very hard dick, which Hansford worships appropriately. Even better—if you’re into so-called “regular” guys in your fantasies--he has a tight, but not gym-perfect, body.
As with magazine spreads, it helps if you bring your own fantasy to each scene. Maybe Hansford is the thirtysomething DILF who’s picked up Crew for a quickie? Or maybe this is a college TA and an undergrad seeking some extra credit? The point is, you're own your own.
The second scene, featuring Justin Wells and Park Wiley, is a little hotter, partly because both men look so turned on during the scene, and partly because tow-headed Park Wiley has a classic “All American” face and football player’s build. It’s a turn-on watching Park Wiley work his mouth over Wells’ dick until it’s rock-hard and what looks to be about 8” long. It’s even more of a turn-on watching Wells’ look of deep concentration as he fucks Wiley doggy style, and the scene ends with a terrific, far-spurting cumshot from Wiley as he’s being fucked.
The third scene is your standard sauna setting. It’s brackets season, and for once, in a context I can understand: a “winner” from each of the previous two scenes is paired off, and Crew and Wiley appear to really enjoy each other as they trade frenzied blowjobs. The question of who bottoms is never answered, though, since the scene ends after they both jerk off.
The next scene gives us Jean Val Jean as a Hollywood type enjoying the attention of Josh Carter. Val Jean’s sunglasses, suit, and pout can make him seem like the HIS version of Michael Lucas. His name, on the other hand, will cause musical theater fans to giggle and make bad jokes about Les Miz for the entire scene. (“Bring him home, Josh!”)
The final scene, starring Justin Wells and John Marcus, takes place in some kind of Miami Vice fantasy club where nobody cares if you get lube all over the pool table. The two men are a bit older looking than some of the earlier performers, and they trade off fucking each other. Marcus has a good, scruffy, daddy-lite look going when he tops—it’s easy to pretend he’s the sergeant on the police force, for example.
As a bonus, the DVD comes with a fairly detailed, highly readable production diary by Jim Steel, who provides a candid view into the shoot. He discusses topics like casting, dealing with publicity, reaching out to the community, working with the creative team on the look of the film, and even dealing with “normal” guests on the set.
The Hard Up men are uniformly attractive, if not really any distinct type. The sex—a vanilla blend of sucking and fucking—is energetic, and the performers are enthusiastic. The whole thing is well-lit, well-shot, and well-edited. There’s no doubt that Hard Up is a good looking video, but unless you naturally have an attraction to one of these guys, you might not find this a necessary permanent addition to your library. HardUp
