Dorothea Hundley Patton has made over a hundred adult films and has worked with stars such as John Holmes, Jamie Gillis, Ron Jeremy and Vanessa Del Rio. She made her last film in 1993 and now lives comfortably in Chicago. What’s that, you’ve never heard of Dorothea Hundley Patton? Oh excuse me, allow me to introduce you to Seka.
In 1978, Seka entered the adult film world, and like a few others has made an indelible impression on the business. Teenagers that would go on to make porn movies themselves got their first look at the multi-billion dollar industry by watching her films. One such person was Stefan Nylen, a fan so interested in Seka that he goes in search of her and investigates the world of adult films from back in the seventies. Along the way we find out how the world of porn has changed, gotten better and grown worse.
Desperately Seeking Seka is not just a journey to find the retired star, but also a look at the adult industry itself. Beginning in Las Vegas at the Adult Video Awards, Stefan talks to directors, publishers and performers who have a long history with the adult film business. Most notable of the interviews, Stefan talks to Jane Hamilton, a one-time performer who has become just as comfortable behind the camera as well as in front of it. Having worked with Seka in a few films, Hamilton tells of her relationship with the star as well as lessons learned from her. The scenes with her are very interesting and insightful. The correlations she mentions between then and now are evident in the clips from seventies and eighties films where there is more creativity in the story ideas and plot surrounding the performers. However, Al Goldstein of Screw Magazine is blunt in his assessment of the country as well as the porn business, and his scenes whether--included in the feature or not--are very delightful.
Along with the feature documentary, there are also over 3 hours of extra material, such as deleted scenes and interviews, extended interviews, a Seka filmography and more. For those interested in the porn business beyond the actual fucking, this is a great watch. My only problem with the whole thing is the length of the feature itself. Clocking in at almost an hour I found myself wanting to know more once it was over. With extras of over three hours, I could not understand how the film could have been so short with so much information on the star and the genre available. The feature could have easily gone beyond two and still not scratched the surface of things.
Desperately Seeking Seka is a DVD for the lovers of the genre from back in the days of John Holmes, Vanessa Del Rio and Jamie Gillis. This is a documentary for the lover of documentaries. It may not be as thorough as it could be or as complete, but it does satisfy with has some nice quirky music to boot. DesperatelySeekingSeka
