Many moons ago, at the beginning of my illustrious career as a reviewer, I pointed up Vivid as one of the current houses that could eventually develop porn into a viable career option. Of course, that’s only slightly shortsighted, because major competitor Wicked is doing a fabulous job on their own to create Hollywood quality productions with supermodel quality stars. Not to mention, porn has frequently been billed as escapist fantasy and non-realistic immediate gratification. But philosophical introspection and articulate social commentary? How often has that happened?
Between the Sheets hits a home run by creating a very voyeuristic, reading someone else’s diary sort of atmosphere interspersed with some incredibly hot sex. Leading lady Kaylani Lei smolders as the tortured soul whose sole mission in life is to find Mr. Right, though she is perpetually plagued by a series of Mr. Right Nows for whom she feels no lasting attraction. She opens the film with Chris Evans, a physically well put together man, who seems to do everything right for her, though, after a Kentucky Derby length cowgirl scene, she laments: “ he was fun, and cute, but….” and so she sees him out of her life.
Of course, what girl in a dilemma would survive without the advice of big sister, played by Charmane Star, who tells our protagonist she should be dating Mr. Rich, instead of Mr. Right. “The difference,” we’re told, is “both want to sweep you off your feet, and they both want to spend the rest of their lives with you, and they both want to buy you jewelry. One, an engagement ring, the other, anything but.”
But what’s a girl with principles to do that desperately wants to feel wanted? Going out for drinks is obviously the right answer. And here we get to see how reckless abandon pushes the door to one’s inner desires to swing wildly in both directions. Catching her attention in the flirty waitress role, as she flits past our main character in a tight tank top and short skirt, Lezley Zen makes off with the vaunted prize to the ladies room for some really interesting POV shots that include Kaylani’s clear plastic heels on the door of the stall as Zen treats her with anything but the calm, cool, collected attitude that her name indicates.
The Fates, it would seem, had other plans for our intrepid adventuress, with a final moral lesson that sometimes, instead of trying to force the situation, you simply have to be open to Mr. Right literally bumping into you as you both wander absentmindedly towards each other. Steven St. Croix comes bumbling along with an armful of boxes, moving into the apartment down the hall from the downtrodden feeling seductress, and literally runs into her as she’s carrying a load of laundry. Happy ending, sweet kisses, candlelight, and, of course, some fantastic sex scenes for us to go to bed feeling warm and tingly inside about. Space restrictions prohibit me from delving further into the deliciousness of what else abounds in this film, but all I have to say is ‘bonus scenes.'
