A Night at Halsted’s is one of HIS DVD’s latest reissues. In standard form, there’s no plot to speak of, just one guy wandering through a sex club, seeing what there is to be seen which, it turns out, is quite a lot. But as it was shot without live sound, the movie is filled with awkward first person narration and badly dubbed sex sounds that only occasionally reflect what’s going on on screen.
Fred Halsted wanders into the club to chat with the guy at the desk about how the action is. After an oddly long and completely uninvolving conversation, he wanders through what seems to be a truck depot (I have no idea) filled with intermittent shots of happy cocksuckers, before heading downstairs into a red-lit hallway.
The first real sex happens in a booth with glory holes. Someone hangs out, jerking off, and while I watched, I tried to figure out if the booth was mirrored or if something trippy was happening with the light. End decision? A little of both, I think. He’s joined on the other side of one wall by a guy with long, greasy hair and a leather jacket, and they jerk off looking at each other before getting down to some cocksucking. The two guys are joined at points by two others and it’s a cocksucking frenzy, but with all the random editing, it’s often tough to figure out what’s actually happening. After the dirty guy (as in unclean, not kinky) eventually cums, we finally move on—more than half an hour later.
We move on to two guys fucking in the hallway while Halsted watches on. They’re both hot in a beefy, unshaven, real guy kind of way. There’s no flip-flopping here—just one extended fuck that is delivered and received with enthusiasm. It’s all scored to The Romantics’ “What I Like about You,” which provides an amusing commentary on the action. But it’s the next scene that dominates.
We cut to a smooth chested guy laying in a sling, happily waiting for takers. He’s approached by one mean looking man with a pronounced scar down his stomach who wastes no time getting to the point. And as he thrusts in, my television speakers erupted in a punk remake of…Chapel of Love?! I finally did the sensible thing and pushed mute. The blond in the sling is the most excited person on screen in the film. He takes cock with gusto and charm, and the scene is easily worth the overall viewing.
Halsted then moves on and watches three young guys in an underwhelming threesome. In a film mostly filled with older, bulky, hairy men, all three are distinctly out of place, and none of them looks particularly happy to be there. The action is tame and looks choreographed. For the first time, there’s some rimming on screen, but everyone looks so bored that any erotic heat is seriously undercut.
In the last scene, Halsted finally gets his own with another young guy, but this one not as twinky as those in the previous scene. There’s a lot of bootlicking, and Halsted acts the passive aggressive daddy while the kid sucks his cock until receiving a face full of cum.
It’s a movie with its moments, but beyond the scene in the sling, nothing really leaps out at you. While it’s great to see some guys who aren’t today’s porn standard, it would have been greater to see them get really into the sex they were having. ANightatHalsted's
