Over 12,000 people in 130 different locations across America and Canada participated in the world’s largest skinny dip, sponsored by the American Association of Nude Recreation (AANR).
The title is new to the Guinness Book of World Records, and the event is hoped to further the cause of naturism, encouraging others to be more comfortable with the human body. The AANR hopes to break the record next year and the next.
According to AANR’s FAQ, nude recreation in North America was a $400 million dollar industry as of 2003. The Roper Organization estimates that 54 million Americans have swum nude in mixed company.
The YMCA did not allow swimsuits since the 1890s, until it became partially co-ed, with times reserved for men only. They cited technical and hygienic reasons.
