Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford, England has opened up a Shakespeare-themed sex shop and not everyone is happy about it.
The shop, Romeo and Juliet’s Adult Boutique, is run by experienced adult boutique owner Katie Gilbert. Her other store, Adam & Eve, is in Evesham.
Romeo and Juliet will feature lingerie and Shakespearean chocolates. The shop does not have a full license. It, therefore, cannot sell hardcore videos and must only make a limited profit from toys and movies. The limited section, however, is what outraging neighbors the most.
Reverend Martin Gorick, the vicar of Holy Trinity Church, expressed particular dissent to the boutique: “It depresses me that something so seedy will be in such a prominent position … It’s a degradation of the environment.” The Holy Trinity Church is where Shakespeare’s body is buried.
Katie Gilbert notes that Shakespeare himself dealt with sexual content in most of his plays. Others have noted that the boutique is next to a bus stop used by many schoolchildren.
Adam & Eve, though fully licensed, was well received by the community, including the mayor, and well reviewed. Gilbert adds it brought more sexual education as well.
