I tend to look at mixers based on versatility. I could easily write about cranberry juice or Sprite, but I always have used sour mix as a catch-all. If sour mix isn’t the most widely used mixer, it should be. Sour mix is just a simple concoction of sugar, lemon juice and egg. Of course, nobody makes it from scratch. Why should they? I have found one company that does it right.
Daily’s Sweet and Sour Mix is by far the best sour mix I have ever tasted. I’ve had various homemade versions, been to bars with sours on the gun or in a free pour container and they all tend to be too sweet, not sweet enough, too sour, etc.
Nothing at all compares to Daily’s. Daily’s Sour could not only replace your margarita or Tom Collins mixers, it should.
If you listen to me, it will.
What does Daily’s Sweet and Sour Mix taste like? Condensed lemonade. Blah. And if you’re into the idea of drinking this straight, please let me talk you out of it first. You’ll need to swallow a weeks worth of Pepcid AC prior to doing something so undeniably stupid. This is the only downside to Daily’s -- when consumed in large quantities, it will lead to a stomachache. Let’s be realistic, though: if you’re drinking large amounts of any alcohol, you have to expect some consequences.
You can use Daily’s Sour to cut basically any liquor. I used to make a margarita that was 75% 80 proof alcohol, 15% Daily’s (and you’ll have to kill me to find the last 10%), and believe me, these were the best margaritas my bar guests had ever had (or so they said, I don’t really know). A little of this stuff really does goes a long way. I think of the strongest shooters I pushed across the bar and how nobody ever noticed until it was too late. My point? If the purpose of a mixer is, in part, to mask the taste of alcohol, then Daily’s Sour is a winner.
It takes more than a great sour mix to make a great drink. Since I’m not a scumbag, I’ll give you a hint: if you put sours in it, shake the hell out of it. Blame the egg for this.
Think of meringue. You know how eggs fluff when you whip them? Any drink you make with sours needs to be whipped. As far as I know, Daily’s doesn’t actually have egg in it, but it has the same qualities. All you have to do is try for yourself. I don’t care what drink you make: Jack and sour, Amaretto sour, sour apple martini… shake the hell out of it. If your preferred drink calls for a carbonated mixer, then top the drink with soda after shaking all other ingredients. Believe me, it’s worth it.
That, class, is a “trade secret.”
As a general rule, use Daily’s Sour any time you want to remove the alcoholic bite from a clear spirit. Daily'sSweetandSourMix
