I have always had a soft spot for Bombay Sapphire. It was the first gin I ever had, at an Oscars party hosted by a friend of mine. I showed up with a bottle of vodka in hand, prepared to drink what I always drank, but my friend offered me a Sapphire and tonic and I haven’t looked back. As the years have passed, I am still amazed to think of gin as a social drink. We do not have to reserve gin for three-martini lunches and multimillion dollar mergers and acquisitions. You can drink Bombay Sapphire without wearing cufflinks or a dark shirt that has a white collar.
As I sit on the floor of my father’s living room, dodging the city for a weekend of peace and quiet, I have remembered the real purpose of gin--to sit back and relax. Bombay Sapphire goes well with a smooth cigar and something light to read. I poured what is in my opinion the perfect Sapphire martini: a glass of Bombay Sapphire and nothing else.
Contrary to popular opinion, good gin absolutely does not taste like Christmas trees. Save that nasty pine needle sensation for the swill you will mix with orange juice. Sapphire gin exhibits a hint of juniper but remains incredibly smooth.
I put the martini glass up to my nose, and let the glass linger for a minute. Unlike most of the plastic-bottle gin, Bombay Sapphire does not assault your nose. Instead, it wafts up to your nostrils, and the smell passes through. As you drink, the smell becomes more and more faint.
That first sip is a real blast. Bombay Sapphire is quite light on the tongue; in fact, you probably won’t taste it on your tongue --you’ll feel a tingle on your lips and another on the back of your throat. As it goes down, the gin feels nice and warm, even if you drink it chilled; the feeling of drinking Bombay Sapphire is warm and tingly, from start to finish.
You can drink Bombay Sapphire in a variety of ways. Gin and tonics are popular (go easy on the tonic, otherwise you won’t taste the Sapphire), but Sapphire martinis are the best way to go. I prefer to order them bone dry.
There are a lot of good gins out there, and a few great gins. Very few can compare with Bombay Sapphire. A few of the boutique gins on the market perform well, but Bombay Sapphire is probably the best readily available gin on the market. Thus, I give it four stars out of five.
