Nagy here. Anyone who’s read our reviews so far knows that neither of us are terribly fond of women being harassed. And from the description on the back of the Night Shift Nurses DVD, we went into this one with relatively low expectations.
“A new doctor has arrived to whip the hospital’s nursing staff into shape. His lesson plan is strict, and he has no tolerance for failure, which is met with the harshest punishments imaginable. The Night Shift Nurses must learn their lessons well if they hope to please their new master … whenever and wherever he wants!” The DVD contains three chapters of the series, each one beginning with a bizarre and bloody mad scientist-style intro, followed by a “narrator narrating while typing at a computer” thing straight out of Doogie Howser.
At the outset of the series, we learn that Ryuji Hirosaka is a gynecology specialist who "disappeared from university hospital 10 years ago and was never seen again" – and has been discovered and recruited for a new job by a former patient, the green-haired Narumi Jinguji. As for why he disappeared, it is implied that Hirosaka – who shall henceforth be known as “Dr. Mullet” for reasons that would be obvious to anyone watching this – had tortured his patients in order to turn them in to sex slaves.
Ms. Jinguji, whose curtains do in fact match the green drapes, was apparently a patient of Dr. Mullet’s. She then became the head of her own hospital, and devised a scheme to turn a wing of the hospital into a "special medical ward for rich male patients.” And of course, this “special medical ward” will require sex slave nurses, and who better to create sex slave nurses than Dr. Mullet? So she hires him, and we get the film’s first sex scene, which is actually a very well-done blowjob scene. Oral sex lasting more than a few seconds is rare in Hentai, and this one was rather exciting. Instead of the usual power scenario, here we have a strong woman taking control of a man, who is obviously more than happy to go along for the ride. A completely consensual sex scene in a Hentai? How about that!
The dialogue is pretty good, though the voice acting is a little bland at times. The actor behind Dr. Mullet (“Bjorkin Styles”) was better than average, though the female cast was uninspired. And McQuade had a bit of a laughing fit at the noises during the two oral scenes, but other than that the English dialogue was reasonable. Anime 18 does give you the option to use Japanese with English subtitles, which we would have picked had the acting been as bad as it’s been in other features we’ve watched.
The animation wasn’t anything to write home about, but the plain hospital setting and typical anime character design didn’t give the artists a lot of room to show off. The motion is clean and fluid, and the sex scenes are well-orchestrated, and the characters all look good. The sex in this one wasn’t as bad as we were expecting. Yes, there were quite a few scenes where Dr. Mullet harasses young nurses, who scream and holler and beg throughout the whole ordeal, and it’s gotten to the point now where we just roll our eyes at this. But the two scenes with Ms. Jinguji were pretty exciting, and were two of the best Hentai sex scenes I’ve personally ever seen. They almost made up for all the female harassment.
Overall, Night Shift Nurses is not bad. The production is good, the acting is pretty good, the sex is sometimes “hardcore” but sometimes great, and the plot was just intriguing enough to keep our attention. That said, we’re not exactly jumping out of our seats to get our hands on the next chapter. I give it two-and-a-half stars, as would my partner, except for the fact that there are nurses. In his words “Nurses … even ‘haranged’ nurses … warrant an extra star.” So we average out to three. NightShiftNurses
