Nasty things are happening on a forbidden island. Mannequins that move on their own and flowers that bloom only when blood is spilled--these are just for starters! This is the kind of macabre that a select few would want to see in their “taboo” anime. Sex and sacrifice go hand and hand in this particular film.
Ryo Inasa comes to visit her cousin, Hotaruko, on Ashihara Island--the same island that was once the home of her mother, who we see was brutally murdered in the opening scene. Ryo can sense strange things are happening on the island and for the most part, it just seems that everyone’s a bit frisky. For instance, she gets quite an eyeful when she catches Kasumi and Misa, the hired help, getting it on, girl-on-girl style right out in the open where Kasumi’s fiancée, Bungo might see.
Yet behind the scenic, serene appearance of the island, brutal sacrifices are being committed nightly in bloody occult rituals. The person behind it all is the mysterious Master Mizuno, a lifeless looking mannequin who sits on a throne in a secret room where the rituals happen.
Hotaruko, Ryo’s cousin, has an unnatural obsession with Ryo and becomes insanely jealous when Ryo grows fond of Ruka, yet another slave girl. Ruka, who happens to be completely enamored by Ryo and is quite the clutz whenever she's near, knows about the sacrifices. Meanwhile the High Priest, who conducts said rituals, is getting some hot slave action from Junko, the last slave girl.
The first person to bite the dust after Ryo’s mom is Misa. Poor, poor Misa, she thought she’d get to do it all night long with Kasumi. Instead the High Priest gets in on the action and just as soon as Misa creams, Kasumi puts a sword through her. Meanwhile, Ryo, who wandered into the secret room and watched the whole thing, flees the room only to find herself in a field of red flowers that only bloom on Ashihara Island. There she finds her cousin, Hotaruko, and falls into a deep slumber from the flower’s scent. She wakes in her bed the next day and wonders, was it all just a horrible dream?
As I mentioned before, you’d have to really love this kind of morbidity in your anime to truly appreciate the storyline and since I am a lover of B-horror films, I found this animation to be right up my alley. Blood and guts, the transference of tendons to bring mannequins to life and, of course, sex and sacrifice give this storyline the right amount of ghastly chemistry needed to hold one’s attention.
The artwork in this film is incredibly detailed. Every character is drawn anatomically correct, if you know what I mean. This makes for very hot and wet sex scenes that give an accurate, blow-by-blow of each and every sexual position shown. Consequently, this also means that the blood and guts scene are just as elaborate. However, far be it from me to complain about blood and sex in my anime. A very good film with a great storyline, I give it 4 stars! CrimsonClimax
