For those of you whose curiosity was further piqued by Why Do Men Have Nipples?comes Why Do Men Fall Asleep after Sex? If the first one was just mediocre, then this continuation is superb. I grew accustomed to the interference of their rambling IM messages throughout the chapters. I was greatly entertained and amused by their offbeat and sometimes slightly off-color sense of humor. Mark Leyner and Dr. Billy Goldberg team up again in this vastly amusing sequel to their previous work. In Why do Men Fall Asleep after Sex? Leyner and Goldberg explore such questions as “Do pregnant women really glow?” and “Does you heart stop when you sneeze?”
This book provides of plethora of even more information, not all of which is useless, providing more facts for you to spout at the next dinner party or social function. And with their unusual IM exchanges, you can see their amusement not just in writing it but also in researching the answers. There’s a quirky wisdom to their wit as they answer many questions that should seem obvious and others with technical acuity. If you indulge in Leyner and Goldberg’s teamwork, you’ll have facts and tidbits that are sure to stay with you for years to come.
There were however, as is usually the case, minor flaws in their design. There were a few questions that weren’t clearly answered, but the authors opted to go off on some philosophical rant. An example of this is their last question, “What would happen if a morbidly obese man got stuck in a chimney?” They go off on a rant about the intent of the question to be to ridicule Santa Claus and its absurdity given the obvious physical dexterity he must possess if able to travel and deliver toys as he does. They go off on other tangents which are a little off the mark regarding this question. They also expound on facts about body mass index or BMI. This question could have been completely left out as far as I was concerned. And I am unsure if this was just their way of checking to see if we’re really paying attention, but they included an identical answer to a slightly different question that was included in their previous book.
But it is further redeemed with the wealth of very uncommon knowledge it provides with facts about men that many women probably never even thought of asking and for men (and some women) there is some little known information about pregnancy and pregnant women. Reading a book like Why Do Men FallAsleep after Sex? will provide a quick and entertaining read that will surely make you understand why such neologisms as edutainment exist. With chapters devoted to subjects from differences in men and women to animals, they explore a wider range of information than in their first installment. I can only hope and wait for a third book by (as they humorously refer to themselves) the “nipple brothers.”
Even if you’re as annoyed as I was at first at the IM text, you should still read the questions and answers. Why Do Men Fall Asleep after Sex? is a humorous hand-around that you can pass along to friends and really cool co-workers if the opportunity presents itself. I not only highly recommend this book but will be subsequently singing its praises for years to come. I will remain in anticipation of more from the team of Leyner and Goldberg.
