In Intimate Invasions, M.R. Strict (a white-collar professional writing under a pseudonym) introduces his readers to the world of erotic enema play. It may seem like a strange subject for a sex book, but for curious readers out there, this slim volume offers advice, safety tips, and thought-provoking stories of enema-centered scenarios both real and imagined. As Strict acknowledges, enema play is certainly not for everyone; it can, though, appeal to the anally-adventurous, or to those with doctor, nurse, or hospital fantasies, and it can prove a unique way to bring punishment and discipline into the bedroom.
Strict doesn’t begin his book with the step-by-step mechanics of how to give an enema: that comes next, after the reader’s curiosity is piqued. Rather, he begins with a story, an example, to show one of the possibilities of how enema play can work. In this opening story, a man gives an enema to a woman who is clad in stockings, bare-bottomed, sprawled over his lap. It is punishment, but also enjoyment, sexy, but also a regression to childhood: the relinquishment of control, having someone else in charge, responsible for one’s hygiene and well-being. It’s a good start to a book like this one, and it’s followed by a clear explanation of how enemas work, from the kinds of solutions used to the equipment used to administer them. Strict doesn’t neglect safety concerns, from potential medical issues to hygiene to questions like how often enemas should be received, or how long people should retain them for.
Another area of concern that this book explores is that of morality: consensuality, what being a good dom or top means, and what the rights and responsibilities of each partner are. Strict’s take on morality and sex is refreshingly free from relativism: there are gray areas, yes, but Strict argues that there are things that are right, and things that are wrong. Playing with someone’s mind in the name of “dominance” or “submission,” Strict emphasizes, is wrong: it’s not what the BDSM scene is about, and if a top ever makes his or her bottom feel guilty for saying “no” to a request, warning bells should go off. Strict also touches upon the emotional nature of dominance and submission, and distinguishes crying as a result of catharsis from crying as a result of emotional abuse. Again, his points are good ones, and make worthwhile reading for anyone considering BDSM for the first time.
The final five chapters of this book consist of more stories, more scenes of enema play, and mostly they’re interesting, sexy, and thought-provoking. Their didactic nature sometimes comes across in repeated phrases emphasizing safety or consent, but for the most part, Strict’s method of teaching by example is a good one, and readers who want to learn more about erotic enema play will find this title an enjoyable read.
