In the Lap of Lush: Brazil
By Natasha Ayers

Brazil is a very sensual place; everything about it exudes sensuality. What is it about this land on the South American continent that has intrigued the world and provoked lustful fantasies for decades? Could it have something to do with the lush vegetation and luscious fruit, beautiful dark-skinned, nearly naked people, and the tribal drumming which echoes of our own instinctual drum-like heartbeats? It is a land rich in many national erotic assets, offering unsurpassable amounts of beautiful landscapes and people. Just the pronunciation of the word “ Brazil” vibrates of sex.

From the delicious native fruits that are a staple in the Brazilian diet—passion fruit, coconut, acai and mango—to the widespread worship of the goddess, Yemanja, who reigns on the fronts of sensuality, fertility and womanhood, Brazilian culture is brimming with aphrodisiacs.

The first aphrodisiacs your senses would acknowledge would surely be the beauty met with the eyes. The people of Brazil are among the most beautiful in the world. When the Portuguese colonizers first came to the land, they were mesmerized with the exotic Native Amerindian women, with their long dark hair, tanned skin and sensuously curved muscular bodies. These were the first of eventually millions of interracial marriages in Brazil. No other culture is as racially diverse and blended. This unique melting pot owes itself to colonization and has been formed by the sexual mingling of peoples from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Native people of the land.

This distinct mixture has created a gorgeous nation of people with lovely tanned skin, perfect bodies, and the famous Brazilian ass. If you were to search the Internet regarding it, you’d find a plentitude of pornographic sites dedicated to the gorgeous Brazilian people and another of their national treasures: their infamous sexual abilities.

The cultural attitude throughout Brazil and its people towards sex is one of openness, curiosity, and freedom. Even though it is a predominantly Roman Catholic nation, with very strong religious currents, there is a saying that grants permission of all sexual

experiences: “fazendo tudo,” which translates as “doing everything.” Even despite what people may publicly say in regards to sexual practices, taboos are rendered meaningless when it comes to what is done beyond the view of the public. Taboos really hold all of their power in the essence of being broken.

Another concept that defines sexuality in Brazil, which literally has no English translation, is “sacanagem.” Its closest English relation is “the world of erotic experience” or “erotic universe.” Because of sacanagem, it is the birthright of all Brazilian people to explore and enjoy all that sexual pleasure has to offer. Brazilian culture celebrates all that is pleasurable in life, and it celebrates sex as the force behind life.

Spiritually, Brazil is also as diverse as its people. Though the majority of the population is Roman Catholic, there are large movements of people who worship outside the confines of the church. Animism, which is the belief that everything in nature has a spirit, and includes the worship of nature and nature’s incredible fertility are huge concepts of the spirituality of the Native Amerindians. When the African slaves came to Brazil, their masters forbade them to practice their traditional religions. Little did they know that their influence upon the country’s spirituality would far exceed the time of their captivation. To this day, this religion known as Candomble` is widely practiced throughout many different communities. The clever slaves used Catholicism to mask their African deities, swapping the identities of Christian saints with those of their own “Orixas,” or saints. The most revered of these is Yemanja.

She is camouflaged beneath the visage of the Virgin Mary, as she is the dominant mother figure of this pantheon.Yemanja is a goddess of the ocean, wet and willing, representing women, women’s sexuality, childbearing, children, and everything to do with fertility. Aligned with many other Pagan goddesses from traditions spanning the world, she is symbolized as a triple goddess, or being seen as three aspects: maiden, fecund mother, and crone. To the Brazilian people she is a symbol of love, compassion, and eroticism. She is celebrated at different times throughout the year, however, on New Year’s it is customary for her patrons to gather at the ocean bearing gifts and offerings of flowers, items of feminine vanity, and special foods she is known to love.

Yemanja inspires the deepest of passion and creativity in lovers, poets, and artists; there is an abundance of poems, folk songs, sculptures and paintings devoted to her undying promise of love, pleasure, and life. The exquisite land of Brazil is extraordinarily arousing to pleasure-seeking hedonists: warm, sultry weather, abundant tropical plant life, voluptuous mountains, exceptionally rich soil, and what most Brazilian live for—the nearly 8500 kilometers of oceanic coastline. The natural fertility of the land makes Brazil one of the world’s largest exporters of agricultural products. This fertility is directly relevant to the diet of Brazilian people; it is highly concentrated with aphrodisiacs. Crown jewels of this magnificent availability of produce are the fruits passion fruit, mango, coconut, and acai. They are not only incredibly aphrodisiacs, but they behold numerous other health benefits.

Passion fruit, known as maracuja, whose name alone stirs the libido, is a delicious treat to arouse the senses. The scent is very invigorating, and it is a fruit valued both eaten whole and pressed for its juice. The exotic taste also makes it an aphrodisiac, as there is nothing that tastes quite like it. It is very high in vitamin C and before lovemaking can be drank to give energy. Passion fruit is thought to relieve high blood pressure; therefore, it is perfect after the love games are through, too!

Mangoes, with their full roundness are reminiscent of the curve of a woman’s hips and ass. They are known to stimulate desires in both men and women. When their leathery skin is peeled off, revealing vibrant yellow flesh, you are hit with an aroma that stirs the senses. As you bite into a mango, your oral senses are flooded as you feel the fleshy texture and your mouth fills with savory juice. Mangoes are also rich in beta carotene, making it quite rich in antioxidants. One nice, naughty little ancient reference to mangoes in regards to sex is in the Kama Sutra, where performing fellatio is likened to sucking on a mango seed.

Coconut, valued for its nutrient rich water, “agua de coco,” is also perfect before lovemaking to ignite the flames of passion, and afterwards as an electrolyte-powered recovery potion. Coconut is believed to be very aphrodisiac because it arouses the body’s ability to produce hormones in both sexes. It is also the perfect remedy for the morning after a night filled with much sexual and drunken debauchery for this very reason: It is a fabulous liver tonic that rehydrates a hungover lover. Its appearance would also make one think of some other kind of love juices.

Acai, a very traditional Brazilian delicacy, is now a mainstream wonder tonic. After having received much deserved press in the past year or so, acai products have flooded the marketplaces. Acai is a potion made from the acai berries, which are native to the Amazon region. They grow wild on certain types of palm trees, and have been honored for centuries by the Native peoples, and in certain regions it is the main food source for many people. Acai is one of the most potent antioxidants in the world, and has a very dense fat and protein content, also rich in essential fatty acids, rendering this unique food a very complete nutritional phenomenon. Though acai isn’t commonly known as an aphrodisiac, everything about its nutritional properties would definitely lead them into aphrodisiac territory. There have even been reports that for men it is a sexual miracle, while both women and men have boasted about increased energy and a definite boost in carnal desire after consuming acai. When consumed in the form of juice, acai is very reminiscent of wine, in both its burgundy color and its deep, velvet-textured taste.

When it comes to culture, Brazil is certainly the epitome of sensuality. Rich in eroticism in every aspect, from the distinctly beautiful people to the native fruits to the worship of the fertility goddess, Yemanja, the soul of Brazil is “sacanagem.” Brazilian culture is entirely an aphrodisiac all on its own, and something all other cultures throughout the world should learn from.
