The Zone, from California Exotics, looks like the love child of Barney the Dinosaur and a holder for a collectible plate. With its sturdy, bulbous plastic construction, and mildly futuristic aesthetic, you could probably put it on your coffee table to confuse your guests, who might have difficulty identifying its true purpose. If they happened to switch it on, however, they would discover that there are seven hilariously named modes to provide stimulation in a wide range of intensities and rhythms. "Foreplay," "Turn up the Heat," "Woo hoo," "Orgasmic," "Throbbing," "Rock n Roll," and "Surging" each provide vibration and in some cases, pulsing action to rev up your sexy time.

The first thing I thought when I saw it was "yikes." The second thing was "do I need to be particularly limber to use this thing, because it looks like it requires 10 minutes of stretching." Now, it is, in fact, a bit tricky to figure out, but can be exciting once you get your bearings. First, I tried putting it on the bed, which worked all right, but ended up being hard on my knees in a kneeling position.

Then, I tried out the edge of the bed. Again, this was okay, but is a serious, serious workout for your legs. The best way I found to use it was to set it on a small chair I have, which allows a wide stance (definitely crucial with this girthy toy) and a lot of room to maneuver. A stool might be even better so that you don't need to worry about the back of the chair getting in the way of your fun! A stack of pillows seemed to be helpful as well.

You'll definitely need to lube up before using this toy. The purple model that I tested is ribbed, but it also comes in a smooth pink version if that's more your taste. The main thing I found bothersome was that the controls, which are located on the three-pronged base, are rather difficult to access while you're riding the toy. This is one case where I would lobby for a remote (and I tend to shun remotes in general).

The Zone provides an impressive amount of power for something that runs on 3 AA batteries, and is a must-try for folks who have enough vibrators in their arsenal to choke a horse and are looking for something a little different. Good for solo play or couples play.
