The very first thing I thought when I looked at the Lelo Mia was, "This looks Scandinavian." Sleek, streamlined, with that almost lack-of-design that the people of northern Europe have become known for, the Lelo Mia is a small pink tube that does, indeed, hail from Sweden. "By blending fashion, femininity, engineering and design, our aim is to create objects not just functional, but seductive in their own right," says their website—a lofty goal, but one that I think they meet with this particular product.
Slightly larger than a tube of lipstick, and intended for toting about in a bag, this little Swedish delight is easy to use—simple plus sign and minus sign buttons allow you to move through the intensities of vibration, as well as four modes: continuous vibration, and three pulsating options (long, intermediate, and short). It comes with a manual in a variety of languages, even though it's the easiest thing in the world to figure out. With an impressive level of vibration available in a relatively small package, the Mia packs a punch in the purse-ready vibrator category. The one thing that might cause consternation is that you do have to press and hold the buttons to change modes, which in the heat of the moment might prove an annoyance.
Smooth and sturdy, in two colors (two different colors of pink, although I wish they were called Blush and Bashful, they're actually Petal Pink and Deep Rose), the Mia is made of glossy phthalate-free plastic. It's not waterproof, however, so be cautious when cleaning her up, and don’t use her in the shower.
But the real triumph for the Lelo Mia in my mind is the power source: Does it take the annoying, tiny batteries of most purse vibrators, the ones that run out so quickly? No. Does it take the ubiquitous AAs, the batteries that have caused more than one woman to raid her television remote for a power source? No. It charges itself via—wait for it—your computer's USB port. I had an audible reaction when I discovered this upon opening the box ("It's USB-ready!!"), because I love, love, LOVE an efficient use of existing technology, and I love, love, love an environmentally sound power source. It’s the best of all possible worlds.
Imagine it: You're bored at work, so you bust out your Mia, charge her up on your computer, and head for the bathroom for a "coffee break." I love it. It truly looks like it could be a portable drive and not a vibrator, so even if your boss or gossipy coworker spots it, they'll be none the wiser. The Mia is falling right between Swedish meatballs and Ikea on my List of Things from Scandinavia I Like.
