Family Planning director Frances Bird says syphilis appears to be an epidemic in the heterosexual population in the Pacific Islands, apparently a breeding ground for STI and HIV. It is difficult to get an accurate statistic, however, because of a lack of sufficient data gathering.
The Auckland sexual Health Clinic reports 47.5 percent of people with syphilis suggested they may have contracted the disease while vacationing, with Fiji listed as a major destination. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Papua New Guinea is comparable to the pattern of infection in Africa.
Bird reports that it is more difficult for travelers to procure condoms in the Pacific islands and that it is possible that they are less conscientious because they are on vacation.
Family Planning and Positive Women have started a movement to encourage the use of condoms and lubricant in travelers planning to have sex. Bird says the trend across the world is heterosexual infection of HIV and that they must ensure that New Zealanders do not jeopardize their health when they are in countries with high levels of HIV infection.
The program includes an informative packet and postcard which offer instructions on condom use and are aimed at New Zealanders 18-35 and will be distributed to traveling venues targeting these age groups. It encourages women to carry extra birth control as well as a “day after” pill in case of emergency.
