The Family Planning Association of Uganda (FPAU), along with support from the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), has announced a plan for the prevention and treatment of STDs among the younger population of Uganda, focusing specifically on sex workers.

The sex industry in Uganda's Kawempe Division is an increasingly STD -idden population contributing to much of the spread of HIV/AIDS in the area. The plan, estimated at a cost of $150,000 and for duration of two years, will provide the young population of the Kawempe division with male and female condoms and will focus on spreading sexual safety and STD awareness. The project also intends to provide treatment and care for those who have already contracted sexually transmitted infections.

Three areas of focus in the plan are Bwaise, Kalerwe and Mulago. These areas are large slums in the region that are home to thousands of extremely low-income individuals and families. Areas like this also tend to host a good portion of the sex trade and have a high prevalence of HIV infections. Kawempe and Komamboga health centers reported that last year roughly 45 percent of those who were tested for HIV infections were positive.

The Kawempe Division's population of 265,000 is predominantly made up of young people, the majority of which do not have access to any type of reproductive healthcare.

The project is also being supported by the Japan Trust Fund and is hoped to bring the issue of sexual health to a level of higher priority in the population and government of Uganda.
