The French Now Say ‘Non’ to Sex
09/21/08
By A. Graves

French researchers say that the once-booming sexual culture in France is fading away. A British newspaper reported that the French have traded in a plate of sex drive in exchange for a helping of insecurity. Daily pressures are now discouraging high amounts of sexual activity.

A survey for Durex claimed only 55 percent of Britons and 53 percent of Americans had weekly sex. Although 70 percent of French had sex, only one in four said that they were sexually satisfied. The survey was released last year and conducted a study pool of 26,000 in 26 different countries.

Dr. Jacques Waynberg, France's leading sexologist, believes that family structures and the modern industrial society are the culprits to the nation’s faltering romance, according to a report by The Independent. The doctor at Universities of Paris VI and VII also believes that people are now placing too much emphasis of having great sex, rather than just having it.

"The French traditionally have treated sex and eroticism more lightly, as a game, something to be enjoyed,” Dr. Waynberg told the Independent. “That, I am afraid, is all changing… sexuality in France is, I fear, becoming anglicized.”

He believes the French are becoming as stale in the bedroom as the British. Jacques-Alain Miller, France's most celebrated Freudian psychoanalyst, also blames British culture. Miller sourced the dying sex drive to the media’s obsession with celebrity sex scandals.
"Globalization is universalizing some of the worst aspects of Anglo-American puritanism: a hypocritical fulmination [by the media] against the smut which it encourages and then uncovers," Miller said. "It is as if orgasm is no longer acceptable in the public domain."
