Sex workers in Australia are calling for the implementation of government guidelines in order to protect the growth of business and to protect the individuals involved.
The fight to allow commercial growth has sex worker organizations in Sydney referencing a call made by the Land and Environment Court. The court has decided in past that developments of brothels cannot be shut down on complaints of morality. Specifically, the Sex Worker Rights Action Coalition is fighting to protect the advancement of sex trades.
The guidelines suggested by the Department of Planning would allow some restriction on the spread of the industry in a way that would keep industry workers happy. Independent sex workers like Saul Isbister support the guidelines that purport to regulate the overall industry while maintaining safety for those working in it.
“That means home-based sex workers in residential areas and commercial premises in commercial areas—a very logical position to take,” says Isbister in clarifying the intentions of the guidelines.
