Sweden, home nation to the first Pirate Party, has announced for the dissolution of the film censorship organization Statens Biografbyrå, which has not cut a major production since Casino in 1995. Censorship will be replaced with Western-styled age rankings (All ages, 7+, 11+, 15+).
Submitting a film for review will be voluntary, but any film not submitted will receive the 15+ rating automatically.
Currently, the age rankings exist, with the additional Förbjuden (“Forbidden”) category, also used sparingly. The last ban of a major release was against Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation in 1997.
Sweden is traditionally more liberal with sex and nudity, finding violence more offensive.
