Survey on Fidelity
07/15/09
By Pierce Delahunt

Survey Researcher Tom Smith reports that “the best estimates are that about 3-4 percent of currently married people have a sexual partner besides their spouse in a given year and about 15-18 percent of married people have had a sexual partner other than their spouse while married,” according to Forbes.

Of those aged 40-49, 20 percent have had an affair compared to only 13 percent of 18-29 year olds.

National Opinion Research Center (NORC) polls have found that slightly more than 80 percent of Americans believe that extramarital affairs are always wrong, compared to 70 percent in the 1970s; 56 percent believe that homosexual relations are always wrong, and 26 percent of Americans feel that way about premarital relations.

Most consistent in the polls, however, is the public’s political indifference to politician’s extramarital affairs, claiming the affairs would not affect their votes.
