Mitt Romney, a right-wing presidential candidate for 2008, is being accused of abandoning his family values in an issue regarding pornography in Marriott Hotels. Romney has been a member of the hotel chain's board of directors for 10 years but has not voiced any opposition to the access of pay-per-view pornography in each room.
His lack of opposition has spurred an outcry from fellow conservatives who see his lack of action on the subject as proof that the family values of his political campaign are false. Conservative groups, such as Ohio's Citizens for Community Values and Washington's Family Research Council, are questioning why Romney has not made any moves to remove pornography from the Marriott chain in his decade-long involvement with the company.
Romney has said he does not recall the pornography ever being brought up for discussion nor was he aware of what an important part it plays in the company's finances. Romney did sit on the board's audit committee but the contracts that were signed in acquiring the porn in each hotel were completed in 1991, one year before Romney joined the board.
In defending their practices, a Marriott Hotel spokesman has said the PPV porn is a financial necessity in the success of the chain. In defending his own lack of involvement in the issue Romney said he is “not pursuing an effort to try and stop adults from being able to acquire or see things that [he] find[s] objectionable; that's their right. But [he] do[es] vehemently oppose practices or business procedures that will allow kids to be exposed to obscenity.”
Many anti-porn and conservative groups continue to question Romney's dedication to protecting family ideals and barring obscenity and are concerned with how this may affect his chances at becoming president. RomneyAccusedofAllowingPorn
