Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle is teaming up with new technology to bring an end to what he considers a large problem in the city: men having sex with men in public toilets. The robo-toilet which has become part of other cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta and New York is the proposed partner in Naugle's efforts to eradicate the city's problem with “homosexual activity.”
The robo-toilet is a timed public bathroom that is self cleaning and only allows a certain amount of time for each use before automatically opening the door and exposing the patron inside. The toilets also play music, feature an emergency 911 call button, sanitize and dry the toilet bowl and cost $250,000.
Naugle's test run of the toilets is being proposed for a parking lot at a local beach known as “the rainbow parking lot.” This is considered to be one of the areas piquing Naugle's concern with homosexual bathroom activity.
Naugle told the Florida Sun-Sentinel he learned of the parking lot and beach area from local gay publications. “The homosexual newspaper said it's the 'gay parking lot.'” He further stressed his concern for homosexuals by saying, “That's not me saying that, that's what they said. I don't use the word 'gay.' I use the word 'homosexual.' Most of them aren't gay. They're unhappy.”
Should the plan to install the automated toilets be approved by the City Commission, they will be paid for with property tax funds.
