Australian businessmen have been bringing back more than souvenirs from their overseas trips. Several men have been diagnosed with HIV during their visits to Papua New Guinea.
Six men in the past 10 months have contracted the virus that causes AIDS. Those numbers will continue to rise, according to the Cairns Sexual Health Service. These “fly in-fly out” trips to the Pacific Islands recently have been a rude awakening for men between the ages of 47 to 66. The Australian Associated Press reported that the men would engage in unprotected sex for some R and R with bar girls and prostitutes. These native hotties were apparently providing more than just a night of relaxation.
More than 64,000 people are HIV positive in Papua New Guinea which indicates the largest HIV epidemic in the Pacific region, according to AAP. Furthermore, Port Moresby plays host to the majority of the nearly 2 percent of adults that have been infected.
"This small cluster could just be the beginning of a very large outbreak,” said Dr. Darren Russell, director of the Cairns Sexual Health Service.
Dr. Russell urged all future travelers to “counties like this” to “be more vigilant about using condoms.” That may not be the type of advice a married man should need but that apparently is the case.
