William Scott Janke, former city manager of Fort Myers Beach, Florida, was fired after Mayor Larry Kiker learned that Janke is married to an adult film actress.

Scott Janke married Anabela Mota October last year, both half-believing no one would learn of her career. When Adult Industry News broke the story mid-July, another reporter called Mayor Kiker to confirm. Kiker turned to Janke.

Janke, dedicated and good at his job according to multiple reports (including those of Mayor Kiker), knew the potentially negative attention it could bring to their conservative town. Mota Janke, stage name Jazella Moore, made only one film during their marriage, trying to keep a low profile.

Janke, not wanting a political sex scandal, offered to resign, but Kiker came up with an alternative: using the “no cause” clause of Janke’s contract, Janke could receive six months’ pay ($50,000) and medical.

This information, slow to come out, has not stopped news sources and organizations from crying foul against a perceived violation of rights. Non-obscene pornography is protected under the First Amendment, and being fired or forced to resign for exercising expression, or for a relative’s doing so, violates that amendment.

Janke and Kiker were and still are good friends; Janke feels bad for the negative press the town council is receiving. Mota Janke is also revered in the community. Though the couple has “hundreds and hundreds” of emails and calls voicing support, the media attention has caused them much stress, and are trying to focus their attention on their children. They are considering leaving Fort Myers.

Janke has worked in government since before1989, as a planner in three Florida communities. In 1989 he began work in Alaska, occasionally alongside former Mayor Sarah Palin. Janke has worked in Florida since 2003, and in Fort Myers since March 2008. He has received multiple awards for his service.
