Sunday brought a protest of roughly 250,000 people marching in Rome to protest the Vatican’s opposition to allowing gay rights.
The Vatican’s strong resistance to altering the ideas of marriage has been fueled by a bill proposed by the Italian government. The bill pushes rights for same-sex couples. While the proposed rights fall short of those of a traditional marriage they would grant certain allowances, such as changes to inheritance laws and rights to hospital visits.
Similar bills have been passed in other parts of Europe but during the conflict between religious institution and modern movement, the bill waits to be reviewed by Parliament.
June brings Gay Pride Month and cities all over the world have, are, or will be celebrating. In the climate of sexual freedom and equality, protestors in Rome took on the religious opposition in the true fashion of a pride parade complete with rainbow-colored flags.
