ICM Registry is taking its dispute with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) over the “.xxx” domain to Washington D.C. for arbitration.
ICM’s proposal allows for a voluntary domain (.xxx) for all sexually explicit websites. They have been working with the idea since 2003. ICANN first approved the domain in 2005, but reversed its decision the next year.
.XXX would be a sponsored top-level domain, like .gov, .edu, or .jobs. The proposal has now been rejected three times. ICM claims ICANN has breached its own policies.
Supporters of the proposal argue the domain will allow for better filtering security and confidence in adult domains. Opponents argue the voluntary domain opens itself to mandating use, then leading to problems of censorship and defining “sexually explicit,” as well as effecting domain-compatibility issues.
