Adult film Pirates receives an R rating, an unprecedented occurrence in the industry. The makers, Digital Playground, are hopeful that this will mean Pirates will be a crossover movie and bring in high revenues.

Although an R rating means no hardcore sex scenes are in the film, it means that mainstream places like Blockbuster will be able to carry it. Joone, the director, said it was their intention to get an R rating from the MPAA all along.

Joone says that the appeal of Pirates is better production quality and a better movie in general, and that it’s pacing is better because shorter sex scenes distract less from the plot.
