Peru’s First Gay Marriage
12/12/06
By SexHerald Staff

Though Peru has not legalized same-sex marriages, the first gay marriage was recently held in Lima at the English embassy.

A British citizen and his Peruvian mate wed under British law knowing full well their marriage would not be recognized by the Peruvian government, even though gay marriages are legal in the U.K. Peter Goad and Marco Bretonoche, both 42, first received permission from the Peruvian government before proceeding with the ceremony.

Britain legalized gay marriages in 2004 with the passing of their Civil Partnership Act. In Latin America, Mexico City; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and, Brazil’s southern state Rio Grande do Sol are the only places where same-sex unions are legal.

Costa Rica and Colombia are still deliberating on whether to legalize same-sex unions, while Coahuila, a large Mexican state that borders Texas, is thinking about a same-sex union law.
