Online Chinese Beauty Contest Criticized for Partial Nudity
05/27/06
By Ethan Donway

There is a debate in China over an online beauty contest on BlogChina, or Bokee.com, for female bloggers in which certain contestants’ submitted nude photographs of themselves. The contest is being called sexist and unethical.

One particular finalist ‘Hedgehog Mumu’ who posted semi-nude photographs of herself for the contest, received the most public votes, but did not win any of the prizes in the finals. Certain columnists have attacked ‘Hedgehog,’ stating that she has “offended the dignity of women.” The top prize was $2,500. More than two million people voted for the finalists in this contest. The top 20 finalists were brought to Beijing to compete in a traditional beauty contest.

BlogChina was criticized earlier this year for attempting to falsely bolster its standing in the website traffic rankings which are measured by Alexa.com. These statistics are often used by Chinese investors and advertisers to judge a website’s popularity. BlogChina executives state that their short-term goal is to be listed on the NASDAQ.
