Edison cop Loannis Mpletsakis says he drove his BMW naked to protect the leather seats. He was wet from a day of swimming and fishing. His reasoning was that it was only a four or five minute drives home and that since it was dark out at 10 p.m. no one would see him. This all happened last June. He is standing trial now.
He stated that he left the scene because of his nakedness and did not want to be seen without his clothes on. Mpletsakis testified that he had had three beers, but that he only hit the box truck after having been struck by a third vehicle himself which caused the accident to occur in the first place. He could not describe the third vehicle saying, “Everything happened so fast.” Mpletsakis stated that he checked on the passengers in the truck, and seeing that no one appeared injured, and that the passengers even laughed at his lack of clothing, he felt it was acceptable to leave.
He took the stand two days ago and is accused of assault by auto due to the injuries incurred to the passenger in the truck. He is also charged with hindering apprehension and leaving the scene of an accident. This all occurred on Route 27 near Talmadge Road, in Edison, New Jersey on June 20.
