New Hampshire is now the sixth state to allow same-sex marriage (not including California). The law takes effect January 1.
Legislation differentiates civil and religious marriage. The government grants civil marriages to any two individuals, whereas religions may decide what constitutes a religious marriage.
New Hampshire was the first state to elect an openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, Right Reverend V. Gene Robinson in 2003. The ruling delighted Robinson.
