The country's first and most famous brothel is up and running again after being left unattended for eight years. The Mustang Ranch brothel in Patrick, Nevada has seen plenty of ups and downs but has now been remodeled and is yet again open for business.

The brothel originally opened 40 years ago, and through multiple conflicts with local government and the IRS has seen many closings and reopenings. The original owners, Joe Conforte and Sally Burgess, met with conflict in the form of Bill Raggio, at the time a Reno district attorney and now the state of Nevada's senate majority leader.

Through many trials, including investigations into consorting with legal officials, rebuilding after arson and reestablishing safety after heavyweight boxer Oscar Bonovena was shot to death by a Mustang Ranch bodyguard.

In 1990 and again in 1997, the ranch saw conflict with the IRS for tax fraud. After decades of a variety of legal conflicts, the ranch was officially seized by the Bureau of Land Management and put up for auction on Ebay.

The Ebay auction was won by Lance Gilman for a mere $145,100. Gilman is a real estate developer and the owner of nearby Wild Horse Resort and Spa, a brothel located one parking lot away from Mustang. Gilman has paid roughly $6 million to move the original buildings four miles and into his property lines and to completely refurbish the buildings from the inside out.

“We spared no expense in refurbishing the original Mustang Ranch and turning into one of the state's most luxurious brothels,” said Susan Austin, a Nevada madam and decorating partner to Gilman.

The efforts of Gilman and Austin to rebuild the Mustang Ranch have received praise and thanks for Conforte who now resides in Brazil, safely hidden from the IRS.
